Origin

The origin of the surname Van den Dobbelsteen is unknown. One possible explanation is that it refers to a resident of a house named De Dobbelsteen, perhaps an inn with dice imagery on its signboard. In colloquial speech, square-shaped houses were sometimes called De Dobbelsteen (Source: CBG | Center for Family History).

The earliest recorded use of the name Van den Dobbelsteen is found in the marriage certificate of Jacob Driessen and Dirckse Hermens (Batenburg 1705). The name was also used in the baptism records of their children.

The Van den Dobbelsteen family was established in Batenburg, a picturesque town on the Maas River with a rich and impressive history. Only after many generations did the surname Van den Dobbelsteen spread to cities outside this region.
